New Delhi: Microsoft has unveiled Mesh technology for its Teams video chat and collaboration platform that will allow people from different physical locations to join collaborative and shared holographic experiences.

With this technology, users can participate in virtual meetings, send chats, collaborate on shared documents, etc.

Now everyone in a meeting can be present without being physically present, using custom avatars and immersive spaces accessible from any device, without special equipment.

“Mesh builds on existing Teams features like Together mode and Presenter mode that make remote and hybrid meetings more collaborative and immersive,” said Jeff Teper, vice president of Microsoft.

Mesh for Teams – which everyone will be able to access from standard smartphones and laptops to mixed reality headsets – is designed to make online meetings more personal, engaging and fun.

“It’s also a gateway to the metaverse — a persistent digital world that’s inhabited by digital twins of people, places, and things,” the company said at its annual “Ignite 2021” conference on Tuesday evening.

Mesh for Teams will be deployed with a set of pre-built immersive spaces to support a variety of contexts, from meetings to social mixers.

Over time, organizations will be able to create custom immersive spaces like the Nth Floor with Mesh and deploy them in Teams.

In his keynote, Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella said “Teams Connect” enables shared channels that could be useful for communicating with external parties such as customers, partners, and vendors.

“With Teams Connect, powered by our Identity Platform, you can establish seamless, secure, and reliable collaboration across organizational boundaries in minutes,” he said.
